K-9 Unit Supervisor Course

(3 days)

Most supervisor courses entail sitting in a classroom while someone drones on about vicarious liability and case law. For a new K-9 supervisor who has never worked a police K-9, this provides little to no practical knowledge of what teams actually do in the field. That is not how this course is structured. You will get a structured lecture that will cover but not be limited to:

· Policy review

· Case law review

· Industry requirements and standards as they pertain to training.

· OPCA on other certifying bodies’ standards and processes

· K-9 utilization report reviews and critiques.

· Pre-deployment planning and decision making.

· Post-apprehension investigations/reviews.

· Preparation and maintenance of training documentation.

· Equipment needs and maintenance for your teams.

Then there will be two days of field training with your K-9 teams. This will help you gain a good understanding of your team’s capabilities and limitations. This will provide you with the practical hands-on experience to know what to look for when evaluating your team’s performance in the field and in training.

Topics will include but are not limited to:

· Bite, aggression and control work.

· Pre-deployment planning.

· Scent theory

· Track / Trailing

· Area search

· Structural Clearance

· High-risk custody teams

· Containment and breakouts

· Article searches

· Setting up assessments of your team’s current abilities.

· Building scenario-based training for K-9 teams.
